The majority of scrapbooks in the Women Veterans Historical Project Collections are from World War II. Sweeney created this homemade album with interesting graphic elements.
Marsha Paulette “Pat” Sweeney (b. 1942), of Pembroke, North Carolina, served in the American Red Cross from 1964 to 1965. Sweeney was born on 17 February 1942 to Joseph Walter Smith and Lula Jane Locklear Smith in Pembroke, North Carolina. In 1964, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and then joined the American Red Cross SRAO (Supplemental Recreational Activities Overseas) in Atlanta, Georgia. Sweeney trained in Washington, DC and served in Seoul, Osan Air Base, and Camp Pelham in South Korea as a recreation aide from 1964 to 1965. On 30 March 1968, she married Patrick Charles Sweeney in Washington, DC.
Her scrapbook documents Pat Sweeney’s tour of duty at Camp Pelham, South Korea from 1964 to 1965. The scrapbook contains a directory of Camp Pelham facilities including the bank, bowling alley, chapel, craft shop, library, post exchange (PX), theater, and other information. There are also maps of Camp Pelham, photographs of the Red Cross building called the Black Horse Inn, American Red Cross staff, and photographs of military members playing volleyball with the Red Cross staff. All the Red Cross staff portraits have handwritten captions with the following information: hometown, school attended, degree, and previous assignments.

Interesting. Linda Johnson Jones (class of 66) was with the Red Cross in Korea in the 1968-69. You might know her.

Why, yes I do! 😉
