Humanities at Work Program

The UNCG Humanities at Work (H@W) program provides exceptional paid internships to undergraduate humanities majors. Students in the program work in small teams with local community partners to learn how to leverage their degrees beyond the classroom. The hands-on, project-based internships will support the partner sites in their vital missions to enrich the Greensboro community.

In Spring 2025, SCUA was selected as one of the four initial community partners for this important program. University Archivist and Student Engagement Coordinator Erin Lawrimore served as the key contact for the two H@W students assigned to SCUA – Daniela Campbell (Spanish major and May 2025 graduate) and Magnus Holland (Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Archaeology and History majors).

Throughout the semester, Magnus and Daniela focused on a range of projects related to the documentation of student life. This work included a survey of existing oral history interviews as well as creating a new exhibit on the second floor landing in Jackson Library (outside of the Hodges Reading Room). The new exhibit, titled “So, What Did You Learn at UNCG?,” takes their personal answers to this question and reflects it back through campus history. They also presented on their work in SCUA as part of the Humanities at Work showcase event on May 2.

Martha Blakeney Hodges Fellowship Program

The 2024-2025 academic year marked the first year for the Martha Blakeney Hodges Fellowship program in SCUA. This program provides undergraduate and graduate students at UNCG with a paid, hands-on learning opportunity in archives and academic librarianship. Hodges Fellows build invaluable skills under close mentorship and training from our archivists in a transformative, unique experience unlike any other available on campus. The program is managed by Erin Lawrimore, University Archivist and Student Engagement Coordinator. Cecil Barlow served as the initial Hodges Fellow. His outstanding final project “Lip Service: Exploring Ineffective and Problematic Women’s Health, Wellness, and Self-Care Remedies from 1800-Present” was awarded the 2025 University Libraries Research Award.

In the second year of our Hodges Fellows program, we welcome two new students to SCUA.

  • Emma Albrecht finished her BA in WGSS and Media Studies in December 2022, and she started the MLIS program with a post-baccalaureate certificate in WGSS in January 2025. She currently works as a library page at the Holly Springs Public Library.
  • Haley Goode completes her BA in history with a concentration in public history in May, and she will be starting the MA in History/Museum Studies program in the Fall. She currently works as a lead student at the Schiffman Music Library.

Emma and Haley will begin their work as Fellows in late August 2025.

FEEDBACK FROM FIELD EXPERIENCE STUDENTS

At SCUA, we are dedicated to student success. We sponsor many student projects (“field experiences”) to help students gain work experience in the field.

Erin Lawrimore asked the students for feedback about their time in SCUA:

  • “I cannot stress how well all the SCUA faculty and staff balanced letting interns have academic/research independence while also checking in just enough to make sure everyone stays on track. This is something I have seldom seen done this well, and the enthusiasm for work among the interns reflects this.”
  • “Everyone was super communicative and made me excited to work with SCUA. I was surprised at how quickly I was received when hunting for a practicum. They made it super easy and helped assuage the trepidation and intimidation that is a capstone/practicum. They were flexible with my interests and skills and were very accommodating.”
  • “I loved being able to shape my experience with SCUA to fit the requirements of my independent study/capstone class. The flexibility to create an experience that worked best for me is awesome. It taught me how to balance and merge two sets of requirements together.”
  • “The positivity at SCUA is such a wonderful place for students to learn and be comfortable asking questions, and grow.”

Every student “strongly agreed” with these statements:

  • “I learned new skills during my field experience.”
  • “I would recommend SCUA as a field experience site to future students.”
