The long-awaited renovations to Jackson Library have kicked into high gear. On January 2, 2025, movers began shrink wrapping, loading, and moving books from the Jackson Library Tower. The Tower as well as the EUC Connector entrance to Jackson are closed to the public, with access to the building, collections, and other library services provided from the entrance on College Avenue (the side of the building constructed in the 1950s). More information on the renovation can be found on the Libraries website (https://library.uncg.edu/about-us/jackson-library-renovation/).
Here in SCUA, the major change during this phase of the renovation is the relocation of Preservation Services Manager Audrey Sage and the Libraries’ Conservation Lab. As reported in the last issue of SCUA news (https://scua.uncglibraries.com/library-conservation-lab-relocation-during-jackson-library-renovation/), in late Fall 2024, Audrey and the lab were moved to a restricted space in the basement of South Spencer Residence Hall. The space in the basement of Jackson Library that previously housed Preservation Services is now serving as a staging area for the packing of books from the Tower.

Another change impacting SCUA is that display case that holds the University Mace and Medallion has been temporarily relocated to the area just outside of Hodges Reading Room. The University Mace and Medallion are part of the University Archives collection and are used for many campus ceremonies, including commencement.
All other work in SCUA – including instruction and reference services – remain in place on the second floor of the College Avenue side of Jackson Library for the time being. SCUA faculty and staff offices remain on the third floor. We anticipate the need to relocate our staff and services in mid-2026, during the second phase of the renovations. More information on that relocation will be shared as we approach that time.
